Joi - enjoying the joys of whitewater & friends

There are many empowering, amazing women in the paddling world . . . ! Every month, the River Angels will feature the "River Angel of the Month" - a female who stands out in the kayaking world. So, nominate someone who you think would be an outstanding "River Angel of the Month" and email us your choice and why.
I have been in the kayaking industry for many years and have met many people along the way. However, this particular women has made a huge impact on me and I’d like for you to get to know her.
June’s “River Angel of the Month”, Joi Electa of Silver Bay, MN (North Shore of Lake Superior), wasn’t nominated because she runs big, gnarly rapids or has won trophies in kayaking events . . . Joi was selected because of her passion, excitement and shear enjoyment for paddling.
What do you do for work/hobbies other than kayaking?
I am an Artist and Photographer, I love Plein Air painting (painting outdoors on location).
How did you ‘stumble’ upon this sport?
I began Kayaking by accident when I tried a recreational kayak at a local resort about 10 yrs ago, I was amazed to find how stable they were in the water and how easy it was to get into little creeks and go exploring. What I found to be the most amazing feeling of being part of the water has stayed with me as I first searched out a decent sea kayak that I could still maneuver in tight little creeks. At that time, I had no idea that they made creek boats or play boats until one day I caught a glimpse of a guy carrying his kayak up a creek...hmmm..that was a little boat..hmmm what was he gonna do..so I followed.
As I hurried along the creek to catch him, he came shooting past me into the rapids and over the falls. I was astounded. It was shortly after that, I met Heather and Nate Herbeck, here on their annual trek to the North Shore, they saw my passion for the sport and connected me with Nora Whitmore, who took me under her wing and has been teaching me.
The white water world is certainly the most connected group of people. I have been witness to a kind of brother/sisterhood not seen in many groups these days. When I wanted to learn, there were plenty of demo boats to try, people offering their spares, lending me gear etc.. I have never felt so welcome or accepted as I do with these people.
What do you love the most about kayaking?
What I love the most about kayaking is that I can go out on a lake and glide in tranquil waters, fish . . . Heck, I have even painted in mine! But, then I can also find excitement in white water, big surf and riding rollers. How many things do you own that can fit any mood you’re in?
What has been the biggest challenge for you, in terms of kayaking? And, how have you overcome that challenge?
As far as challenges go . . . Every step has been a challenge for me, from putting together gear (thank you fellow paddlers :) to getting to whitewater that is not too wild for a newbie like me. My goal is to someday soon be good enough to run the water that is in my backyard. I'm workin on it, in the mean time I will enjoy my sea kayak and paddling Lake Superior, exploring our 10,000 lakes and get in a little kayak fishing while I'm at it.
How has kayaking changed your life?
I have my kayak to thank for changing my life; for giving me a new sense of exploration and excitement...for letting me glide silently down a stream and into the forest to explore where few can access; for letting me look at a waterfall in a whole new way; and, most of all for giving me new dreams of green lines and swirling eddies.
A big thanks to Joi for sharing with us her passion for paddling . . .
